Response to commenter at Queens Crap

One of the commenters at the Queens Crap link mentioned in a prior post has this to say:

"LOL, the store is not doing well... making less money than they thought... how to fix this?

I know lets unionize the workers forcing the company to spend EVEN MORE!! Yeah, that will be fantastic!!!

Gee boss, I know times are tough but I'm sure if you gave us more money and more time off and bigger benefits, sales would pick right up!!!"

They are called straw arguments. Make up things people have said. Then mock them for the things you made up. Buy an intellectual crutch.

I am not arguing for 1. higher wages; 2. more time off; 3. 'bigger benefits.'

Costco is often a great example of how an employer treat its employees well. My concern is how Costco treats its workers in Rego Park. I want Costco to succeed!!! My future is tied to it. At the very least, a good dialogue between workers and management might be a start to accomplish that.

  1. Joining a union just means that you have the right to "negotiate" your hours and schedule and not have them dictated-- that's what the commenter didn't get. Union shop doesn't automatically you just get higher pay or whatever you want.

Workers in the US haven't been trained to accept "at will employment" which means shut up or be fired...

  2. Very true. Many picture union workers as greedy slothful louts. Some are....as in any classification of workers.

  4. Staten Island store #316 should be unionized as well. The job you apply for and accept is never the job you actually do.

The front end can NEVER handle their own responsibility forcing other departments to send their employees to do front ends job for infinite periods of time and consequently fall behind on their own work. This I might add is often met with disciplinary action, (verbal warnings, write ups, etc).

Your schedule will be changed at a moments notice, (considerably less than 24hrs notice) with no warning and you will be expected to drop everything to meet this demand, when you need something however.... good luck!

There is no regard whatsoever for employee well being. All too often is a case of sickness or injury that is played of as nothing. Not long ago a pallet clocked and employee in the head knocking them unconcious. Before a medic was even called the first priority was hiding the employee's lifeless body behind the scenes to make sure the store opened on time.

Another incident which is very common practice here is employees not being permitted to take their breaks at the times they should , (2, 4, and 6 hr marks). On several occasions I've witnessed employees hours overdue for breaks go home having taken one or none of them. Sometimes even leave sick from severe abnominal pain having to put a bite to eat off so long.

Warehouse management is completely inept and lacking any and all common sense. Their definitions of problems and solutions are so incredibly ass backwards I often wonder what kind of drugs they are on and where I can get some of them.

Workers for this store are routinely treated like slaves ... ask any employee and you'll find everything I've said. The only reason employees stay is because comparable wages and benefits are just not found many other places. The company obviously is aware of this and take full advantage of the fact.

What a union would do for us and the Rego Park store is provide a safe haven to fight against the constant working out of title and retaliation because we don't agree with management. Unionization would simply allow us to have a voice and a platform to make our case and persue action where appropriate.
